Overview

AMEC has worked in the nuclear sector since the birth of the industry almost 60 years ago and today employs over 2,000 specialists in this field

Many of the world’s nuclear facilities will be reaching the end of their active life over the next 20 years. The clean-up and management of the nuclear legacy is one of the most demanding challenges facing the industry.

AMEC has a long track record of working on the world’s most complex nuclear decommissioning sites. Two prime examples include the world’s largest decommissioning contract, Ignalina in Lithuania, where we were responsible for the programme management; and the Decommissioning Framework Contract at the Sellafield site in the UK.

Waste management

Waste management is essential in the clean-up of any nuclear facility or site. Our services provide customers with solutions in waste characterisation, through waste minimisation and processing, to the transportation and safe final disposal of the hazard.

We have operations in Slovakia and Czech Republic that specialise in:

  • Radiological monitoring using broad range of techniques from manual to highly sophisticated applications of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)·
  • Removal and separation of radioactive sludge from the storage tanks using the ROVs and subsequent in-situ treatment
  • Design and implementation of bespoke decontamination services
  • Automatic system for measurement of gamma activity for free release or waste characterisation ·          Repackaging of wastes in historical repositories

Our commitment to safe and efficient on-site operations demand highly skilled and innovative project management, and our project teams focus on ensuring that our customers’ requirements are met.
