National Grid, the gas distribution and electricity transmission company, has a rolling programme to replace the UK’s major gas distribution pipelines. It selected AMEC as its partner to deliver key sections in the towns of Sheffield, Leicester, Nottingham and Derby (known as the M1 corridor alliance). This long-term relationship is one of just four major alliances that National Grid has undertaken to complete the upgrade programme.

National Grid has enjoyed a close working partnership with AMEC through the M1 Corridor Gas Alliance over the past four years. The alliance continues to be a great success, reflecting AMEC’s commitment to ensure staff from both organisations are brought together as one, successfully delivering a challenging gas mains replacement programme.

Policy Manager
National Grid

Our focus on project planning has allowed us to differentiate ourselves by undertaking a large proportion of studies in the field, rather than being office based.

We have been able to work closely with local authorities and build strong relationships, ensuring swift resolution of any issues that arise. As a result, we achieved the delivery targets three months earlier than planned.

When our work is complete in 2013, we will have delivered an essential part of the country’s pipeline replacement programme for National Grid that will be able to operate safely for another century.

AMEC was part of the team from National Grid and the Gas Alliance Partnership that won the ‘Best Purchaser – Supplier Partnership’ at the CIPS Supply Management Awards 2005.
